“A creative dyeing service like no other in Australia”
The Story
The modular lounge was originally grey and no longer suited the new apartment. Dyed to a rish navy, together with a a small battle to refit them, the covers look great.
Fibre/Fabric: polyester sueded
Original colour: mid grey
Dye colour: indigo

Covers dyeing

Loose chair, lounge and cushion covers generally dye well, as they are made to wash regularly and fabrics are preshrunk. After dyeing, particularly if the covers were a tight fit before colouring, we recommend refitting them when damp/ wet (not dripping) and drying them on the lounge. Natural fibre fabrics can be stretched to refit more easily when moist. Synthetic fabrics need ‘steam’ to regain size.

choosing a colour

Faded fabrics. We have achieved the best results when faded fabrics are re-dyed to the original colour. When dyeing faded fabrics to a new colour, it is sometimes necessary to ‘strip’ the original colour. This provides an even fabric base for the new colour. Alternatively, the original colour can be incorporated in the new colour choice. Discuss this with your consultant.

If the fabric is white and relatively new, your colour choice is extensive. When covers have been in use for some time and are faded and stained, choose a dark colour to hide the problems. If fading is serious, dye may not cover quite as well as the non-faded fabric areas. Nevertheless, our customers tell us that the appearance of their covers after dyeing is greatly improved. It is better to remove the original colour (cotton & linen fabrics), dyeing onto an even colour base. As the age and wear of items is unknown, we cannot always predict the final colour and condition of covers after dyeing. Light and surrounding colours hopefully will team with your new colour choice. If a ‘clash of colours’ occurs – all is not lost! We are able to ‘shade’ the result (change the tone) providing the covers are in a good condition. Shrinkage is unusual with loose covers as they are generally made from pre-shrunk fabrics for regular washing.

before dyeing

Seams must be overlocked and all raw fabric edges secured! For the covers to fit after dyeing, it is essential that no fraying occurs during the dyeing process. Cullachange can provide this service.

after dyeing

Give the covers a hot wash with detergent to remove any surplus dye around seams, piping and zips. While damp, refit inserts into the cushions and coverall onto the lounge as fabrics stretch easily when wet. Dry the pieces separately, then put the lounge together when dry. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester may need ‘steam’ to stretch and refit after dyeing (see Finishing)
